From a Prayer to a

Sathya Sai College in Australia

In an interview with Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Robert and Wendy Cameron asked for permission to establish a school to supplement the secular education their children received in Murwillumbah. With Swami’s approval, the school started in a barn on private property in March 1997 with nine students.

Thanks to a generous donation, the school moved to a 2-storey building in Murwillumbah in 2000. In 2006, the Board of Directors purchased the adjacent land to construct a permanent school with classes from kindergarten to grade 6. In 2015, premises in Dungay were purchased for food technology and science classes, and in 2018, a secondary campus was established in Dungay with 23 students. Since 2018, 90% of grade 6 students have moved on to the secondary campus.

The first batch of five grade 12 students took the Higher School Certificate examination in 2021. Three secured university admission, and two entered the workforce. The expansion continued in 2022 with four new classrooms. Today, in 2025, Sathya Sai College, Murwillumbah, stands tall as a non-denomination school from kindergarten to 12th grade with 300 students.

The school has a clear vision: character development with academic excellence. The Institute of Sathya Sai Education, Australia, and the school’s Board of Directors have introduced fortnightly human values-based education training for all teachers. The school’s logo proclaims that excellence based on the five human values is its motto.

The school has grown because parents want their children to imbibe the five human values. Notable changes have taken place in the students with continuous improvement of character, which community members have noticed and welcomed. Service activities performed by students also have had a positive impact on the school and community.

“The end of education is character.” – Sri Sathya Sai Baba, May 20, 1991
