Faces that Spoke a Thousand Words of Gratitude

Fiji is an island country, an archipelago of more than 330 islands in the South Pacific Ocean. About 87% of the population lives on the two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, many living either in the capital city of Suva or in smaller urban centers.

Between August 25–30, 2024, 127 healthcare professionals and volunteers from Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia took part in the SSSIO’s healthcare mission in Fiji. They included specialists in pediatrics, internal medicine, cardiology, geriatrics and stroke, orthopedics, pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, gastroenterology, dentistry and optometry. They were supported by a dedicated team of nursing staff and lab personnel.

The whole team served with patience, love, and unity and showed their resilience during difficulties and challenges brought on by long travels and sleep-deprived nights.

A total of 2,535 patients were provided with comprehensive medical care in mobile hospitals. Medical consultations included primary and secondary prevention, evaluation, and advice on medications, and psychiatric evaluation and management.

A participant remarked, “Loved how approachable and friendly every member of the team was, from kitchen staff to clinic professionals. There was no hierarchy, everyone was treated with great respect and dignity ...”

“Doctors should serve the poor with a spirit of sacrifice. There is no greater service than this. As man is the embodiment of God, it is his primary duty to help the destitute and the forlorn.” - Sri Sathya Sai Baba, July 5, 2003
